Organize Your Tailgate Party

This past weekend, I watched Michigan State beat Notre Dame in an exciting come-from-behind victory in OT.  Football season is definitely in full swing, and the American tradition of tailgating is alive and well.  So how do you organize a tailgate party without stressing yourself out?  Follow these tips to ensure a fun time is had by all:

  • Basics – How many people will be attending?
  • Plan the Menu – What type of food do you want?  Potluck, traditional grill food (brats and burgers), one-pot meal (chili), taco bar or something else?  There is no right or wrong answer here!
  • Create a Checklist – Create a packing checklist that you can reuse.  Although this is not all inclusive, here are some suggestions: food, drinks, cooler, ice, grill, grill utensils, charcoal or gas, chairs, plates, cups, utensils, decorations, music, containers, blankets, rain gear, lawn games, collapsible table, condiments, bottle / can openers, hand wipes, canopy, trash bags, first aid kit, sunscreen, toilet paper (just in case)
  • Divide & Conquer – In the spirit of teamwork, involve everyone.  Do NOT try to do it all alone.  People will be happy to pitch in, and it will make the event more enjoyable for everyone.
  • Prep Ahead of Time – The fun of tailgating is getting to spend time with friends and family, so keep it simple and do as much of the prep ahead of time as possible.
  • Arrive Early – Plan the timing so you are not late for kickoff.
  • Relax and Have Fun!
