Why You Should Use Eco-Friendly, Bamboo Organizing Products.

Bamboo - an eco-friendly and sustainable natural resource

Incredibly, almost one million acres of forest vanish off the face of the earth every week. Typical sixty-foot hardwood trees cut for marketplace use take 30-50 years to regenerate while a sixty-foot bamboo plant takes a mere 59 DAYS to replace.

Bamboo may be the most eco-friendly, sustainable natural resource the world has. Its root system is continually sprouting new growth and new shoots, which makes replanting after harvesting unnecessary. And bamboo does all this naturally without any chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Bamboo reduces runoff and prevents water pollution via its high nitrogen consumption. Growing bamboo also dramatically reduces greenhouse gases because it absorbs carbon dioxide five times more than the same number of trees and produces 35% more oxygen than the same number of trees.

For all of these reasons, bamboo – the world’s fastest growing plant with a tensile strength comparable to steel – is the thoughtful, eco-friendly way to go when selecting products to help you get organized. Going Green isn’t a fad and it’s NOT going away. Increasingly, consumers recognize the need to select products made from a sustainable and regenerative source and are choosing alternative materials, like bamboo, over traditional non-sustainable materials, like typical hardwood trees.

There is a Native American proverb that says, “Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.” Everything we do, and everything we do NOT do, is our legacy to future generations. It may seem like a small thing, but buying organizing products made out of bamboo will help reduce your personal impact on the environment and affirm that it is possible to live well – and organized – while still living in an earth-friendly, sustainable way.

Here’s to being organized for life!

Like many things in life, sometimes its just too good to be true. I excitedly jumped on the bamboo bandwagon, until I did some further research. Bamboo does have all of the qualities mentioned in the post, but unfortunately some who grow and harvest it are greedy and want more, pouring pesticides and fertilizers onto their crops. Also, clearcutting established hardwood forests to then plant bamboo (a grass, not a tree). Methods for turning bamboo into cloth are can also be very toxic, although gentler processes do exist.

I do buy bamboo; it has many great properties, but as with all things, I am careful to check my sources. Just because it is bamboo, does not mean that it is definitely green.

Thanks chromacosmic – Unfortunately, I have found this to be true with a lot of “green” products. The environmentally responsible movement, as with any other, attracts those who are merely jumping on that bandwagon for the profit and are hiding their motives behind the latest trend. If you are truly concerned with being green, you must do your research. Thanks for the comment!
