My #1 Productivity Tip (And It Takes Less Than 2 Minutes!)

beautifully made bedAs a professional organizer, I always get asked: How can I be more productive? How can I get more stuff done everyday?

These are both great questions, and the answer lies not in what you do but how you think. Let me give you an example.

One of my #1 suggestions for being more productive is: make your bed.

Now, there’s the obvious organizing result — that your bedroom looks neater with a made bed. But that’s really beside the point here. Instead, consider how making your bed helps you be more productive, not necessarily organized. (I’ll give you a hint. It’s not about doing the task and getting to check it off your to do list!)

Making your bed sets the TONE for your day. It says I’m up, I’m focused, I’m ready to work and get things done!

Not making your bed, well…it says the exact opposite. It makes you want to just crawl right back under the covers and be lazy.

Do you see the difference?

So think positively about your time, your schedule, your to-do’s — and see how much better your life can be as a result. It can literally be the difference between operating at a whole new level of productivity or stagnating where you are now.

What are some productivity tips or tricks that you use to motivate yourself?

This is a great tip. For one reason once the bed is made they look around to see what else in the room they can do to make it look good.

I’ve done that throughout life and it really is true. It has to do with the mindset, not the actual task. It’s about looking back at your own work and feeling pride. It’s a great feeling and it does set a sense of consistency, which is nice where the only constant in many aspects of life otherwise is change. Make a simple commitment to yourself and then look back at the result of keeping it throughout the years…

I do that more at work than at home, but I know what you mean Jennifer. Things like never leaving my desk messy at the end of the day. It fosters a sense of pride and commitment when I walk in in the mornings. Thanks for the comment!
