A Weekend of Contrasts: How Organizing Can Help Your Mood

dress shoesSaturday morning, 7:15 am:

Hubby’s up. Dogs are up. That means I’m up. Waahhh. Get up. Fix coffee. Kitchen’s dirty. Dishes stacked up on the counter from last night and the stove is greasy. Yuck. Sit down on my sofa among the jackets and backpacks for a few quiet moment of coffee-savoring. Feeling crowded by the stuff.

Oldest Son calls to remind me that he needs a ride to his friend’s wedding soon, and to ask if Youngest Son remembered to get his dress shoes from friend’s house. #@%*&!…Youngest Son’s friend is out of town. But Youngest Son manages to borrow a pair from another friend. Will drop them off at our house soon.

Shoes arrive minutes before Oldest Son does. Never seen such a sorry looking pair of shoes outside of a dumpster. Oldest Son is not pleased. Need to stop by Target on the way to the wedding for a pair of dress shoes. Desperately need a shower, but need to run. Throw on yesterday’s clothes, put hair in a ponytail and fly out the door. I’m overdressed and it’s warm out. No time to change. Blech. Feeling rushed.

Thankfully, Target has shoes. Get Oldest Son to wedding and head home. Hubby calls. “Please pick up batteries for the remote.” Rats. Off to Walmart, feeling fugly. Buy batteries. Should probably get salad and fruit at the grocery store, too, before I head home. Then, back to the dishes stacked up on the counter from last night and the greasy stove. Set to work cleaning up so I can have a peaceful breakfast. Or should I say lunch. Feeling overwhelmed.

Need a shower more than ever now, but figure I should just get the house cleaned up, laundry done, dogs walked and meals cooked before I relax. I make sure I have the dishes done and the house straightened before bed this time. Take a looong hot shower and collapse.

Sunday morning, 8:30 am:

Get to sleep in! (yes, 8:30 is sleeping in) Make my morning coffee. Check my emails. Relax and take in the morning. Feed the animals. Take the dogs out. Hubby makes breakfast. Go back to bed for a short morning cat nap. Feeling absolutely refreshed and relaxed. Spend the afternoon baking bread in my cozy, clean kitchen. Catch up on a little sewing.

Now, I won’t say that organizing the night before would have turned my Saturday into my Sunday, but it sure would have helped it not be quite so crazy. And it would have helped boost my mood enough to get me through the crazy a lot easier. Don’t you think?

I sooo want to kick myself when I bag out & don’t organize the night before…it’s like disaster is looming on the horizon. Just a quick 10-15 minutes makes all the difference in the world! Thank you for your post!

It’s amazing what a difference just 15 minutes can make, isn’t it? Thanks Sherry!
